Mist is a story-driven survival RPG and visual novel from 395games that combines exploration, turn-based combat, resource management, character interactions, and light horror. What begins as a quiet trip to your late grandfather's mountain cabin quickly turns into something much stranger: an unnatural fog cuts the area off from the outside world, hostile creatures appear in the woods, and survival becomes more important than whatever relaxing vacation you originally had in mind. The game is much more interactive than its visual-novel presentation first suggests. You gather food, explore new regions, fight monsters, improve stamina and other combat-related stats, discover equipment, fish for supplies, navigate tunnels, and gradually open additional locations as the mystery surrounding the fog develops. You can play on Windows, Linux, Mac, and Android, making Mist a good fit for players who want something closer to a compact RPG than a dialogue-only VN. Key Features
  • Survival mechanics - food is a real resource, and running out eventually puts the protagonist into a starving state that can lead to a game over.
  • Turn-based combat - fight several kinds of hostile creatures while earning EXP and gradually increasing your stamina and combat effectiveness.
  • Exploration-focused progression - investigate forests, tunnels, the mountain, the cabin area, and later environments tied to the central mystery.
  • Four core companions - Robin, Mia, Lily, and Noreia each receive their own conversations, events, and relationship-focused content.
  • Fishing minigame - fishing develops into a proper side activity with a tutorial and balancing changes for larger catches.
  • Resource gathering - collect food from different spots, harvest mountain resources, search for useful items, and keep supplies under control.
  • Building and upgrades - later progression introduces construction-related systems, including projects that unlock additional activities.
  • Gallery support - unlocked scenes can be revisited, and later versions provide hints when hovering over locked gallery entries.
The survival side is one of Mist's strongest differentiators. Food is not just a decorative inventory number: the developer reworked the system so that completely running out begins a three-day starvation countdown. That puts pressure on exploration without turning the game into constant farming, since gathering rates were adjusted at the same time to reduce unnecessary grinding. Ferns on the mountain, fishing, and other gathering spots all contribute to keeping your supplies stable. Combat progression was also rebuilt to fit more naturally into the adventure. Instead of repeatedly training stamina through an isolated garden activity, you gain EXP through actual combat and use progression to raise stamina over time. The stamina cap was increased, monster EXP values were rebalanced, and several older grind-heavy systems were removed. The result is a cleaner loop: explore, fight, gain strength, survive longer, and reach increasingly dangerous areas. Robin is especially important early on. Her introductory material and several early quests were rewritten so the opening moves faster and feels less repetitive, while still leading toward the same broad story direction. Mia receives her own conversations and evening events, Lily becomes increasingly important as the mystery grows, and Noreia arrives later as the fourth major girl. The game gradually shifts from simply surviving with a small group toward understanding why these characters are connected to what is happening around the cabin. Exploration keeps expanding as the story progresses. The changelog references forests, new wilderness sections, tunnels with their own map function, a city, a lodge, additional environments, and an entirely new area leading into the closing portion of the game. The tunnels in particular become important to understanding the mist, and later versions make navigation easier by letting you consult a map while exploring them. There are plenty of smaller activities between the major story beats. Fishing has its own minigame and tutorial, the garden provides nighttime interactions, you can spend evenings with the companions, and certain construction projects unlock additional places to spend time. New weapons, items, music, sound effects, and enemy types are also introduced as progression continues. Mist is also effectively a complete story rather than an endless early-access loop. The later updates move into the final arc, introduce a new area before the last major confrontation, and version 0.11 was described by the developer as finishing the game's story. Version 1.0.3 then focuses primarily on polishing the finished experience, removing a large number of typos, fixing a rare tunnel softlock, resolving fishing issues, and adjusting older images. If you like visual novels but want actual systems to manage between conversations, Mist has a strong balance. The horror is more atmospheric than relentlessly frightening, while the survival mechanics remain accessible enough that they support the story rather than overwhelming it. It is a particularly good match for players who enjoy exploration, gradual upgrades, mysterious environments, and a small cast that stays relevant throughout the whole journey. How to Play: Explore the available locations, gather enough food to avoid starvation, fight monsters to earn EXP, improve your stamina, complete quests, fish for supplies, find new equipment, and continue investigating the origin of the mist. Keep separate saves before major story sections if you want an easier way to revisit different events. About the Developer: Mist is developed by 395games.
